Ideas and inspirations from our 8 day trip to Seoul in April 2012, or as James Brown might have said, "I've got Seoul..."

Five drum dance at the Korea House

Our last lunch was Korean BBQ at the Maple Tree House in Itsadong. Kalbi, Beef Bacon, and Bulgogi were particularly good.

Seoul, 2008 by Sangbin Im - it does not look like this YET

We bought a Bangjja bronzeware gong at Napcheong Bangjja in Insadong. It has an incredible sound!

We bought this example of Kukje embroidery in Insadong. Silk shoes with leather soles and hand-stitched embroidery. Not for wearing!

We were invited by a Korean friend for dinner at Goo STK 528 - a serious steak house with a daily meat menu.

Looking across the DMZ into North Korea supposedly propaganda village (with skyscraper).

Having dinner tonight with Bahk Seon Ghi in Seoul, a great guy who creates these fantastic charcoal sculptures.

I went to the DMZ today, but there was no way to capture the sight of the world largest flag pole on the North Korean side. First you have to take pictures only behind a yellow line so as to not provoke the North Koreans which is way back from the wall, and the North Korean side is still pretty far away. (The DMZ is a 4km wide swath)

Last day of Sakura at the entrance to the secret garden (Huwon) at Changdeokgung Palace

The dinner show at the Korea House is a great way to see short examples of music and dance. The fan dance and the five drum dance were my favorites.

The Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) or 한반도의 군사 분계선 cuts the Korean Peninsula roughly in half between South Korea and North Korea. It is the most heavily armed border in the world and a common tourist destination. Here at Panmunjom, you can see South Korean policemen in the foreground, and a North Korean solider on top of the steps.

For our last night in Seoul, we are taking a friend to the Top Cloud grill in the Chongro Tower Building for a great view of Seoul at night.

Seoul at night

We'll stay at the new Banyan Hotel in Seoul, outside of the main downtown.

I wanted to stay at the Rak Ko Jae Guesthouse in Seoul but they don't take kids.
