Perfect Lips…

This is Phylllodes Imperialis, the Imperial Fruit Sucking Moth, in its caterpillar form. It has a giant skull and eyeballs on its head to scare away predators. It worked on me and I’m not even a predator.

High Trestle Trail Bridge…

This picture looks like it may be a manipulated combination of many photographs of one person climbing up and then back down the peak called “Ago del Torrone” in the Italian Alps. But, in fact, this photo isn’t manipulated at all. It is over two dozen climbers all in a row, all dangling in perfect order.

Roll cloud, Punta del Este, Uruguay In January of 2009, this roll cloud was seen over the beach resort town of Punta del Este. Roll clouds most often appear in coastal areas — the circulation of sea winds plays a part in their creation.

Mammatus storm, Norman, OK Some intense mammatocumulus showing they are indeed tied to storm activity. The photographer notes this was taken with a 1-second shutter speed.

Waterspout, Balearic Islands, Spain A waterspout is basically a tornado that’s not associated with a supercell and occurs over water. Coincidentally, the Balearics are also where you can find some of the clearest water in the world.

Altocumulus from the ISS Altocumulus formations usually comprise many individual cloudlets and take shape at heights of 6,500 to 23,000 feet. The whorls visible in this altocumulus layer, as seen from the International Space Station, are caused by two regions of ocean air moving at different speeds.

Lenticular UFO, Patagonia Another iconic UFO lenticular cloud, this one spotted over the mountains of Argentinean Patagonia.

Lenticulars, Mt. Rainier, Washington These are classic lenticular shapes, often referred to as “UFOs.” Going by my Flickr search, they’re somewhat more common than average around Rainier.
