Photo: LIFE ON AN EMIGRANT SHIP, 1902 Have you ever wondered what it was actually like to voyage across the Atlantic Ocean to start anew in North America? The American photographer William Herman Rau captured this extraordinary photograph of the crammed conditions on an emigrant ship bound for Ellis Island, New York, in 1902. Not much fun, right? I have no idea what nationality the emigrants are but some of those boys look like they are Irish. Mr. Rau also took the photograph of the two woman carrying turf on Achill Island which Wistorical posted on 8th March. Does anyone know any more about this photo? ******************************************************* If you enjoy historical photos like this, please spread the word and click the 'Like' button on the main http://www.facebook.com/wistorical page.

♥ Kim Phuc was pictured in a world-famous and iconic photograph from the Vietnam war, running naked from an airborne attack, horribly burned with napalm, in June of 1972. Since then, Kim has found peace, and a message she can offer, borne of her suffering. She runs The Kim Foundation International, and she acts as a Goodwill Ambassador for UNESCO. She has transformed into a viable, visible symbol of peace and hope. Hers is an important story of resilience, courage, and forgiveness.

Photo: Ballast train wrecked during the Irish Civil War at Ballyvoyle Viaduct, Stradbally, Waterford, Ireland 21st Jan 1923. The ballast train had been engaged in repairs in the Durrow area and left for Waterford. It was intercepted by Republicans and sent back westwards towards Ballvoyle Viaduct, which had been blown up the previous August. The locomotive No. 189 and the Inchicore J15, ended up at the foot of the viaduct piers and the ballast carriages draped over the truncated embankment.

**After parcel post service was introduced in 1913, at least two children were sent by the service. With stamps attached to their clothing, the children rode with railway and city carriers to their destination. The Postmaster General quickly issued a regulation forbidding the sending of children in the mail after hearing of those examples.

Gisella Perl,a successful Jewish gynaecologist in Romania in the 1930s and 40s.She was taken to Auschwitz in 1944,where she treated women with kindness and compassion. She was asked to report all pregnant women to Josef Mengele- better known as the Angel of Death. When she discovered what was done to them (medical experimentation and torture, ending with often being thrown alive into the crematoriums)she vowed that there would never again be a pregnant woman in Aschwitz. So she began the abortions.

Helen Keller and Anne Sullivan--What a wise woman...and yet without the help of Anne Sullivan, no one would've known. “I long to accomplish a great and noble task, but it is my chief duty to accomplish small tasks as if they were great and noble.” ― Helen Keller

This flag was carried by Colonel Stand Watie’s Cherokee Mounted Rifles; the body of the flag is the First National pattern flag of the Confederate States; the canton is blue with eleven white stars in a circle, surrounding five red stars representing the Five Civilized Tribes (Cherokee, Creek, Choctaw, Chickasaw and Seminole); the large red star in the center represents the Cherokee Nation. “Cherokee Braves” is lettered in red in the center of the white stripe. From the Trans Mississippi Museum

John (Fire) Lame Deer “Before our white brothers arrived to make us civilized men, we didn’t have any kind of prison. Because of this, we had no delinquents. Without a prison, there can be no delinquents. We had no locks nor keys and therefore among us there were no thieves. When someone was so poor that he couldn’t afford a horse, a tent or a blanket, he would, in that case, receive it all as a gift. We were too uncivilized to give great importance to private property. We didn’t know any kind of money and consequently, the value of a human being was not determined by his wealth. We had no written laws laid down, no lawyers, no politicians, therefore we were not able to cheat and swindle one another. We were really in bad shape before the white men arrived and I don’t know how to explain how we were able to manage without these fundamental things that (so they tell us) are so necessary for a civilized society.” — John (Fire) Lame Deer

"Sitting Bull, killed by his own pistol". As Bull Head went down after being shot, he fired into Sitting Bull's side. Red Tomahawk was directly behind the group and carried a small revolver that he had taken from the Chief. With this revolver he shot Sitting Bull in the head. "The relatives of the policemen killed during the failed arrest attempt had beaten Sitting Bull's body virtually unrecognizable." (Sitting Bull - His Life and Legacy, 2009).
