I'm a self-professed news junkie, and although this collection may not be complete and up to "standards", it is a distilled highlight of what I'm looking at within international cultural events and news, as and when "it" happens. (*these images link to their source; none of these photos are mine.)

7 Sept. 2012: Crosby, Stills & Nash as old as they are.. are touring California starting tonight at the Greek Theatre in LA. They've come a long way since Woodstock in 1969 and "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" (which Stills' wrote about his broken love affair with folk singer Judy Collins). I have no idea if they still have their sing song voices but they are true rock legends and hold a place in the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame.. Stills actually holds 2 awards with one being for his previous band Buffalo Springfield. Follow link to hear their music through the years.

18 August 2012: "Just in: Romney says he’ll kill arts funding" In an advance leak of an interview with Fortune magazine, the Republican candidate says he will eliminate funding for the National Endowment for the Arts, ending half a century of modest state support. 17 August 2012: Pussy Riot Closing Statements (Russia). In a country that was willing to sic its secular court on a “religious” cause, Pussy Riot are true revolutionaries. Follow link to read their closing statements.

17 August 2012: Today Russian courts sentence Pussy Riot for 2 years prison time. Last night at the Ace Hotel in NYC, artist Karen Finley, Johanna Fateman (Le Tigre), singer Justin Vivian Bond, poet Eileen Myles and Chloë Sevigny took part in a free public reading of letters and courtroom statements by Pussy Riot.

11 August 2012: Please don't forget to look up tonight everyone, and tell all your friends. It amazes me every year how many people have no idea that this happens.

6 August 2012: Explosion from Refining Alberta Tar Sands, Chevron refinery in Richmond, California. Smoke over San Francisco Bay rising from the East Bay. Filmed on Treasure Island.

6 August 2012: Today NASA's Rover landed safely on Mars the Red Planet's Gale Crater. This image taken by NASA's Curiosity shows what lies ahead for the rover — its main science target, Mount Sharp.

5 August 2012: Jamaica's Usain Bolt wins Olympics 100m final at London 2012. Bolt, doubted by many after a season dogged by defeat and injury, ran the second-fastest time ever to beat fellow Jamaican and training partner Yohan Blake into silver and American Justin Gatlin into bronze.

6 August 2012: After losing to Federer at Wimbledon, Andy Murray wins men’s singles Olympics tennis gold on his home turf.

3 August 2012: American 15-year-old Katie Ledecky won the 800-meter freestyle at the London Olympics on Friday. The youngest member of the U.S. swim team narrowly missed a world record in the grueling race, falling off pace on the last lap and finishing in 8 minutes, 14.63 seconds.

3 August 2012: USA Missy Franklin set a world record in the 200 backstroke Friday for her third gold and fourth medal overall at the London Olympics.

3 August 2012: Michael Phelps won the 200 metres individual medley for his first individual gold of the London Olympics yesterday, bringing his haul of career Olympic medals to 20.

2 August 2012: Gabby Douglas, 16, of the U.S. Women's Gymnastics Team at the Olympics, just made history by winning the Gold medal in the women's individual all-around.(CREDIT: CSM /Landov)

Stella McCartney’s Biggest Olympic Design Challenge? The Speedos. Yes.. McCartney is the designer for the British Olympic Team outfits. Her inspiration was the British flag.. no mention to be found where she had the garments manufactured. Hopefully she was more inspired to be patriotic than Ralph Lauren's contract with the US team!

1 August 2012: Gore Vidal dies; imperious gadfly and prolific, the graceful writer was 86.

1 August 2012: Great Britain's men won an astonishing London Olympic bronze medal in the gymnastics team final - having originally taken silver before a Japanese appeal. China wins the gold.

1 August 2012 -London Olympics: Michael Phelps makes history with gold in the 4×200 relay.. this earns him a total of 19th medals.

1 August 2012 -London Olympics: Women Gymnastics US wins Gold; Russia -Silver; Romania -Bronze

26 July 2012: Artist, Yayoi Kusama in her installation Fireflies on the Water (2002) two weeks ago. The room is currently on view at the Whitney, NYC as part of Kusama’s retrospective.

25 July 2012: Filmmaker Alison Klayman's documentary called "Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry" is now showing. It chronicles Ai's crusade to seek justice for an alleged police beating in China. He is known for his large installations and designs like the Beijing's Olympic Stadium, known as the "Bird's Nest". Ai's run-in with police came as a result of his support for the victims of the Sichuan earthquake, part of which manifested itself in a Munich installation where he spelled out a Chinese phrase using colored school backpacks that represented the child victims.

22 July 2012 -The Open Championship (British Open): Ernie Els clinched his second Open title after long-time leader Adam Scott spectacularly imploded at Royal Lytham & St Annes.

23 July 2012: As of today no artists remain on MOCA's board: John Baldessari, Catherine Opie, Barbara Kruger and Ed Ruscha all resigned from the board of trustees at Los Angeles' Museum of Contemporary Art. LA Times has written an article "It's bigger than just MOCA: ..tensions mirror a greater cultural discussion" ... Just hoping Deitch doesn't take MOCA to Comic-Con next year! (photo: Lawrence K. 22 July 2012: Happy Birthday, Edward Hopper! Today is the birthday of painter and printmaker Edward Hopper. The artist who created "Nighthawks," one of the most recognizable American paintings, would turn 130 if he were still miraculously alive today.

22 July 2012: Art Collector Herbert Vogel Dies At 89. As art collectors, Herbert and Dorothy Vogel amassed over 5,000 works despite a modest income. They were among the earliest collectors who championed minimal and conceptual art in the 1960s. Pieces from the Vogel's collection have been distributed to museums throughout the nation.

22 July 2012: Bradley Wiggins becomes first British cyclist to win Tour de France! He secured his win with a dominating performance in Saturday's final time trial to extend his already commanding lead. Fellow Briton and Sky teammate Christopher Froome finished second, 3 minutes 21 seconds behind overall.

14 July 2012: Opening ceremony outfits for the U.S. Olympic teams designed by Ralph Lauren display the designer's logo larger than the American flag... too bad the uniforms are made in China. 14 July 2012: The Green Party of the United States formally nominated Dr. Jill Stein, who campaigned on a promise to create a Green New Deal in America, as their presidential candidate at the party convention Saturday. Stein, an internist from Lexington, Mass., blasted both Romney and President Obama, saying both had become too dependent on donations from corporations in order to acquire office at the expense of the nation's citizens.

10 July 2012: For the first time, women outnumber men on the U.S. Olympic team. The U.S. Olympic Committee released its roster for the London Olympics on Tuesday. There were 269 women and 261 men.

9 July 2012: Ernest Borgnine (born Ermes Effron Borgnino; January 24, 1917 – July 8, 2012). Here he is with Grace Kelly in 1956.

8 July 2012, Final Wimbledon Tennis Championship 2012: Andy Murray's bid to win Wimbledon was ended by Roger Federer as the Swiss claimed a record-equalling seventh SW19 triumph and 17th Grand Slam title. Federer won 4-6 7-5 6-3 6-4 on Centre Court to match the mark set by Pete Sampras and reclaim the world number one ranking.

7 July 2012, Wimbledon Tennis Championship Final 2012: Serena Williams overcame a resurgent Agnieszka Radwanska to clinch a hard-fought 6-1 5-7 6-2 victory and earn her fifth Wimbledon singles title.

6 July 2012, Semi-finals Wimbledon Tennis Championship: Andy Murray became the first British man since 1938 to reach the Wimbledon final by beating Jo-Wilfried Tsonga today, living up to the hype and expectations at home that seemed to get bigger with every year. 6 July 2012: Six time Wimbledon champion Roger Federer is delighted to reach a record eighth final. The third seed progressed to his 24th Grand Slam semi-final win over tournament favourite and top seed Novak Djokovic. He will now face Andy Murray in Sunday's final.

6 July 2012: Julia Bluhm a 14-year-old who led a crusade against altered photos in Seventeen magazine now has a promise from top editor Ann Shoket to leave body shapes alone, reserving Photoshop for the stray hair, clothing wrinkle, errant bra strap or zit.

5 July 2012, Wimbledon Tennis Championship 2012: Andy Murray will attempt to become the first British man to reach a Wimbledon singles final for 74 years when he takes on Jo-Wilfried Tsonga on Friday.
