The U.S. Open is the oldest golf championship of national prominence in the United States dating back to 1895 (also known as the second leg in the Grand Slam of Golf). This tournament is one of the most challenging in the sport for both qualifying professional golfer or any amateur. In excited anticipation it holds all the "greats" of the game winning at least one to justify their historic resumes. This year the 2012 U.S. Open Golf Championship will be played at the historic Olympic Club, located in San Francisco, California; it's the fifth year the tournament has been held at this venue with the upcoming dates, June 14-17, 2012. 17 June 2012: James "Webb" Simpson is an American pro golfer and winner of the 2012 U.S. Open. Overlooked for so much of the week, "Simpson emerged on a fog-filled Sunday at The Olympic Club with four birdies around the turn and a tough chip out of a hole to the right of the 18th green that he converted into par for a 2-under 68. He finished at 1-over 281, and it was enough to outlast former U.S. Open champions Jim Furyk and Graeme McDowell." -huffingtonpost.com

Louis Oosthuizen is a South African professional golfer who won the 2010 Open Championship and was runner-up in the 2012 Masters Tournament.

Dustin Johnson is an American professional golfer who currently plays on the PGA Tour. He is one of the longest drivers on the PGA Tour, having been third in the driving distance stats for three consecutive years (2009–11)

David Toms is an American pro golfer who plays on the PGA Tour. He has won a total of thirteen events on the PGA Tour including the 2001 PGA Championship. He has spent a considerable amount of time in the top 10 of the Official World Golf Rankings between 2001 and 2006 and ranked as high as fifth in 2002 and 2003.

James Furyk is an American pro golfer, 2010 FedEx Cup champion, and 2010 PGA Tour Player of the Year. He has won one major championship, the 2003 U.S. Open. Furyk is known for consistently playing at the top level and for a visibly unconventional, looping golf swing.

16 June 2012: Tiger Woods is back on the course with a share of the U.S. Open lead. Michael Thompson left the clubhouse Saturday two strokes behind the leaders -- Tiger Woods, Jim Furyk and David Toms -- at +1. Defending U.S. Open champion Rory McIlroy, Masters winner Bubba Watson and top-ranked Luke Donald all missed the cut. So did last week's winner at Memphis, Dustin Johnson, and 2010 British Open champion Louis Oosthuizen.

Rory McIlroy: Northern Irish pro golfer. He is formerly the World Number 1. In 2011 he won the U.S. Open, setting a record score of 16-under-par on his way to an eight-shot victory. He's been cited as the most exciting young prospect in golf and having the potential to become one of the highest earners in sports in terms of endorsements. McIlroy holds world ranking #2.
