"Bruce Lee was born in San Francisco on November 27, 1940 in the year of the Dragon. Lee was raised, however in Hong Kong where he began his first formal training in martial arts with Wing Chung Master Yip Man when he was 13. At the age of 18, Bruce Lee returned to the United States and attended the University of Washington in Seattle where, as a philosophy student, he began to train students in the art of the Chinese Gung Fu. Lee met his wife Linda during this time and opened his first school, the Jun Fan Gung Fu Institute. Lee later opened schools in Oakland and Los Angles while he and Linda raised their son, Brandon, and daughter, Shannon, Lee quickly began to develop new ideas about martial arts and training based on many of his experiences, leading him to the creation of his own art called Jeet Kune Do. Bruce Lee went on to train many private celebrity student, such as Steve McQueen and James Coburn, and became a celebrity in his own right with his entree in American media via The Green Hornet and, of course, his later films, which catapulted him to iconic status. Bruce Lee's life, however, was cut short when he died on July 20, 1973 in Hong Kong from a cerebral edema caused by an allergic reaction to a pain medication. Lee was 32. According to Dan Inosanto, Lee was interested the martial arts weapon -nunchuku long before it became popular amongst martial artists in the west, and it was certainly his use of it in films that popularised it among martial arts cinemagoers.

Lee’s gung-fu school taught stu­dents of all races, which the local Chi­nese gung-fu com­mu­nitty didn't approve with. They issued an ulti­ma­tum to Lee to stop teach­ing non-Chinese, and when Lee refused, they issued a challenge.. needless to say Lee won the fight and challenge in 3 minutes. Lee said that Jeet Kune Do is a a "style without style" or "the art of fighting without fighting". His style works with minimal movement with maximum effect and extreme speed.

Lee wrote about his style of martial arts: "... I hope to free my followers from clinging to styles, patterns, or molds. Remember that Jeet Kune Do is merely a name used, a mirror in which to see 'ourselves'. . . "

The English name, BRUCE, was given to him as a baby boy by a nurse in the Jackson Street Hospital, San Francisco.

Lee’s suc­cess did not come eas­ily. In fact, he had to over­come sev­eral obsta­cles, includ­ing racism, set­backs and a debil­i­tat­ing phys­i­cal injury.

In 1964, at the age of 24, Lee appeared at the Long Beach Inter­na­tional Karate Cham­pi­onships, where he amazed the crowd by per­form­ing feats like two-finger push-ups.

Lee had an incred­i­ble depth and bal­anced his phys­i­cal skills with East­ern and West­ern phi­los­o­phy, he kept an exten­sive library and filled vol­umes of note­books with his own writing.
