Frédéric Moynier at Washington University in St. Louis: discovered evidence that the Moon was created when a planetary body the size of Mars smashed into the Earth about 4.5 billion years ago.

Felix Baumgartner plans to leap from just under 23 miles above the Earth's surface. A helium balloon will carry the Austrian to an altitude of 120,000 feet. Event streamed online: http://www.redbullstratos.com/

Snake Nebula (aka Barnard 72) is a dark nebula in the Ophiuchus constellation. It is a small but readily apparent S-shaped dust lane that snakes our in front of the Milky Way star clouds from the north-north-west edge of the bowl of the Pipe Nebula. To the right side of the Snake Nebula is found Barnard 68. Below it are found Barnard 69, Barnard 70, and Barnard 74.

Photographer Mike Killian captured this picture of the Jan. 19 Delta 4 rocket launch from Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

July 07, 2012: Runaway Black Hole at Plane of the Milky Way. The ESA/NASA impression shows an oblique view of our Milky Way galaxy. The black-hole system GRO J1655-40 is streaking through space at a rate of 400 000 kilometres per hour - 4 times faster than the average velocity of the stars in the galactic neighborhood. The yellow star is our Sun.

3 July 2012: Spacecraft Cassini recorded Saturn's bright moon, thin rings, oddly broken clouds, and warped shadows. Titan, Saturn's largest moon, appears above as a featureless tan as it is continually shrouded in thick clouds. (Photo: NASA)
